Reviewer: Linda K. Connelly, PhD, DNP, MSH, CNS ARNP, CNOR (University of North Florida Brooks College of Health) Description: The 18 chapters in this medical-surgical nursing book cover the major diseases and discuss the role of the nurse in the treatment process for each system/disease. The previous edition was published in 2014.Purpose: The purpose is to explain how to identify signs and symptoms and interpret medical test results, and to provide the appropriate nursing interventions to help patients recover or live a healthier lifestyle. These are worthy objectives, as medical-surgical nursing is the basis of all nursing care. The format makes it easy to be able to review a system/disease process quickly to learn or review the basics, including nursing interventions. The book meets the objectives, with each section laid out in an organized format, starting with how the system works followed by just the facts about the certain disease process.Audience: The author refers to \"the nurse\" as the audience. He says medical-surgical nursing can be challenging in the beginning, so the book apparently intended for beginning nurses. I would include nursing students and LPNs. The book is excellent for nurses at any stage in their career, and it could be useful for advanced practice nurses to review. The book meets and surpasses the needs of nurses in medical-surgical nursing. It also would be an excellent resource for nursing units, even specialty units such as the operating room, labor and delivery units, and radiology units. Patients come with comorbidities and this could serve as a quick overview of the comorbidity. The author has a DNP and a strong background in this series and in teaching.Features: The book is presented in a systematic format, starting with an overview of how the system works. It discusses how the system is affected by a particular disease or pathophysiology and lists signs and symptoms along with nursing diagnoses. It goes on to provide the prognosis of the particular disease with nursing interventions, including patient education topics. Common test results and medical treatments are also included. One key feature is the \"what went wrong\" section. The book uses a paragraph outline format, which makes it easy to get a quick overview of a disease. The language is clear and easy to follow. There are a few graphics, and some information is highlighted in blue boxes. However, the blue boxes contain different information in different chapters. This could be confusing as one chapter has signs and symptoms in the blue box, while another has nursing interventions. A sensory chapter could be added to address diseases of the eye, ear, and nose.Assessment: This is a high-quality book that would be an excellent resource for nurses in any area. Even in specialty areas, patients have medical-surgical problems and this book could serve as a guide on nursing units. The only similar book would be Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy, 4th edition, Gersch et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2017). That book does have many illustrations, which are very helpful in learning about the pathophysiology and how various diseases affect the system.
The third edition of Equine Wound Management is an excellent resource for equine clinicians and veterinary students. This textbook offers a review of wound healing physiology and possible complications as well as a comprehensive guide for the treatment and management of many types of wounds. Because wounds are a common ailment seen by equine practitioners, it is critical that a reference on this topic be specific and complete; this book is both. Chapters are organized in several categories such as management of wounds (eg, topical wound care treatments and wound care products, approaches to wound closure, and bandaging and casting techniques), anatomic location of wounds (eg, wounds of the head, wounds of the distal extremities, and wounds of synovial structures), and special considerations (eg, management of severely infected wounds, sarcoid transformation at wound sites, and innovative approaches to wound management). This organization scheme works well, and information is easy to find. The authors state that they intended to provide a reference with both theoretical and practical information, and both areas are addressed. To deliver practical information, an abundance of good-to-high-quality photographs and illustrations with clear descriptions of procedures are provided throughout the text. The illustrations of suture patterns and flap procedures are very informative. New to this edition are highlighted boxes with tips on what to do and what to avoid in various situations, which summarize and emphasize the key points of each section. The book has a companion website that contains case studies, videos, interactive questions and answers, and other resources that will be particularly helpful for veterinary students. The price of this book is comparable to that of other books with a similar scope. It will be a great addition to the reference collection of any equine veterinarian or veterinary student. 153554b96e
