In the following experiments, we tested whether mating cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) plants with relatively close genetic background is an effective way to increase the effectiveness of the honeycomb selection. We compared the efficacy of honeycomb selection based on single-plant seedcotton yield between two cultivars with a genetic background that is different from each other: Gossypium hirsutum 'Zunla' (ZN) and 'Yueliang No. 19' (YLN). In a greenhouse experiment with the ultra-low density of 1·2 plants/m2, twenty selfed plants (1 plant/m2) from each of these cultivars were selected based on seedcotton yield per plant and the 10 best were selected for each cultivar. The 10 best selfed plants from each selected cultivar were combined and tested in three locations at a density of 1·2 plants/m2. The results showed that the selection based on seedcotton yield was more effective than selection based on random selection. The conclusion was that honeycomb selection based on single-plant seedcotton yield in the absence of competition is an effective technique in breeders' seed treatment in order to avoid gradual degeneration and beneficially exploit any latent or newly developed genetic variation.
