This is a easy way to fix a zipper without replacing it. This method is really fast too. It works when the zipper pull doesn't close the zipper together anymore. I don't really like to replace zippers, because they always come out a little bit wavy when I do it myself.
You will only need a pair of pliers. But if the zipper pull is really destroyed or is made of plastic you will need a NEW ONE OF THE SAME SIZE. YOU CAN FIND IT IN ANOTHER OLD JACKET. Or you can buy one online for really cheap.
(ONLY FOR IRON ZIPPERS) With the pliers close the two sides of the zipper pull, try to make it look like the original shape again. If your zipper pull is not too worn out you can try to close it directly on the zipper, without removing it.(if it is made out of plastic, if it is too bent or if it breaks doing this, you need to find another one of the same size, they are available online, or you can take it from another old zipper).
This was freaking so easy a cave girl could do it!!! I got the sweatshirt for 97 sense originally 2599 because I had a broken zipper I saw your stuff and bam done that's 97 cents ever bought thank you thank you thank you
An excellent article that saved me $25 to replace a zipper to my favourite hoodie jumper. Thanks.Noting that an additional tool that helped me is a flat screen driver with thick edge - used to widen the stopper initally to fit back into position before tightening with pliers.
If the teeth are broken the whole zipper needs to be changed. If the slider (the part that opens or closes the zipper) is hard to move up and down on a metal zipper, use some graphite on the zipper teeth and it will slide easily. Don't know what would work on a plastic zipper .
If a plastic zipper (with teeth or with coils) is having issues moving up and down you can use a silicon spray or something called Super Slick Stuff. It smells like oranges while the silicon just smells bad.
You know, you can squeeze the zipper slider without taking it off the jacket. If the slider is broken, you can replace just the slider with a new one the same method as above. The small metal piece at the top is a stopper, not teeth.
You can do that without removing the zipper in the same way. If you have to renew the runner go from the top of the zip and remove the stops and if you cannot refit the stops just sew around the last teeth and it will stop the runner coming off.
Pin the other side of the zipper to the left back side seam, using the pressed crease as a placement guide for the zipper coil. The zipper will be face down on the right side of the fabric. (Again, the pink pin in the photo below indicates the zipper notch.)
If the opposite ends of your straps are not yet basted to the back of the jumpsuit, do so now, ensuring they are not tangled. Repeat the same steps as above to secure the back lining to the back jumpsuit. Roll the zipper seam allowance towards the lining to properly match the armscye notches.
Be very careful not to trim too much of the corner at either side of the zipper. This area will experience a lot of wear and tear as you open and close the zipper each time you wear your jumpsuit. Instead of trimming down the excess zipper tape, try trimming just the jumpsuit and lining seam allowances. You may have to undo a few stitches.
Using a pair of tweezers, fold the zipper tape and seam allowance down in a 45 degree angle. Keep this corner pinched in place with your tweezers as you turn everything right side out to keep it in place.
If you are unsure how to change the foot over, be sure to refer to the manual. When attaching it, make sure the needle is on the side you are sewing, i.e. if the zip is to the left of your needle, the zipper foot should be inserted on the left.
If you're wondering how to fix a zipper with thread stuck in the teeth, a toothpick is all you need. Identify where the thread is stuck and use the toothpick to gently pull the threads until they are separated from the teeth. Once loose, use scissors to cut the thread, and remove the thread pieces.
The steps for how to fix a jeans zipper or other zip with crooked teeth are as simple as the problem is common. First, pull the zipper head over the area with the bent teeth, and gently squeeze the head with pliers. This will straighten the crooked teeth. Finish up by giving the zipper a good clean using a mild soap, such as Dove, paying particular attention to the area you have just fixed.
First, rub a graphite-based pencil or wax candle back and forth over the zip front, then repeat over the back of the zip too. Next, leave it to soak for 2 minutes before pulling your zipper head up and down over the area you have just rubbed with graphite or wax. If it's still a little sticky, repeat these step until your zip's movement is smooth and normal again.
With this simple guide, you should now know how to fix a zipper, including knowing how to put a zipper back on and sewing an invisible zip. Remember, always check the label before washing your zippered items, and if it allows, use a fabric conditioner with your detergent to make them smell wonderful!
Sandwich one long edge of the zipper between a piece of lining and the outer fabric it is already stitched to. Stitch again, along the same stitching line on the outer fabric, to attach this side of the lining. (If this part is confusing, this is where it might help to watch the video).
Unzip the zipper 3/4 of the way. Fold the pouch so that the outer fabrics are right sides together and the lining fabrics are right sides together. Make sure to match the outer fabrics at the zipper and fold the zipper teeth toward the lining. Folding those teeth the right way is the key to not having a pinched looking zipper when you sew this.
Thank you so much. I loved this zipper bag so much that I decided to incorporate it into a knitting needle case that I made! Now all my small knitting essentials are contained in the case and readily available.
Awesome tutorial! I really like that you have a video to accompany the written instructions. I am a beginner and I plan on using this tutorial to sew my first zipper. Not sure if I am going to use the bag for cosmetics or sewing supplies.
I have made many of these zippered pouches but it has been a while. I needed some help remembering how to make one. This tutorial is amazing. Each step is very clear and photos are easy to follow. It went together so fast and turned out perfectly.
Hi MellyInspired by your zipper pouch, I made a little bag with an outside pocket of my lining garment. This bag has two straps to carry it.For the outside I used denim and for the lining I chose for a fabric with some constellations. My wfe thought it was very nice made, and it has only been my third project ever.I am a little bit proud of myself now.
Thank you so much! My daughter came home and ask me to make her a pouch to keep her tips in. I went to pinterest and there you were with a 15 minute zippered, lined pouch! How could I go wrong?! I made us both very proud of me! Thanks again.
Well, you sure answered a lot of my questions on how to make a zipper pouch. I want to make some zipper pouches for Christmas as stocking stuffers and I had no idea where to begin. I found your page and there you are answering my questions and giving me more ideas. Thank you so very much and I am off to my sewing room to begin.
Thank you so much for posting this! I made my adult children silk pillowcases (seems to be all the rage these days) and wanted to make little bags so they could travel with them if they wanted. This pattern was perfect and I had a bunch of miscellaneous zippers so the instructions on making them shorter was so helpful! 2b1af7f3a8
