You may be wondering, why are there not more game engines by the number of engines listed and why did FlaxEngine not showed up? I spoke with the lead developer, who told me about the following two reasons:

Building a game engine from scratch is an awesome goal. However, the amount of time required to do so and all the stuff that goes into the project is huge. FlaxEngine was started about 5 years ago and has been in the making ever since. This proves that the task of building a game engine from scratch may be somewhat of a Herculean one to undertake.

Second, as FlaxEngine is still in early development, the API is not 100% complete or not as polished as it can be, or is not all there. This proves that FlaxEngine is not ready for public use. However, the engine is still stable and the developer is quite active giving updates. Anyone wishing to try this engine out, should definitely check it out and if you like it, help it is him. Since it is a bit of beta at this point, the FlaxEngine development team is also glad for a quick review and any feedback. The team will look into their code and add missing features or even fix unexpected bugs. This should be done quickly, for the sake of stability.

I doubt any of the engines on this list will be used for a truly small game. However, they can be perfect for minigames, like those used to play at casual gaming tournaments. Finally, I cannot decree FlaxEngine as a valid choice for a title, though I wish it the best of luck with ongoing development. If you are interested in a similar engine, go take a look at FlaxEngine.
