Vidhu Vinod Chopra said about 1942: A Love Story: “I was fascinated to work in a period film. I had long been wanting to work in an old Hindi film. But I was never free to do it. But this film was free of all the prohibitions of period films. It was more a story of love. Many films have been made on this theme, but I am glad that I made this one. The performances were brilliant. The love story between Rajeshwari and Naren was very smooth and the chemistry between them was superb. Anil Kapoor was indeed a revelation in his first film. This film was the kick start to the career of Anil Kapoor. He had not acted before this film and his performance was considered as the one of a lifetime. He said that he had performed for his dying grandfather. He had been hanging around the character of a faithful slave of the British. He was a mimic and a mimic of a mimic! His character was a bit of a buffoon. He had to adopt a completely different character, which he totally transformed in this film.
