while i couldnt fix the repo, i decided to just make a clone of it and work off that. i knew the data was there, so i created a new copy of the canonical repo, and i made a few configuration changes to the config file i showed in the previous tutorial and the ref file i showed in the previous tutorial. i made a couple more minor tweaks, like switching to a git binary that uses faster compression algorithms to get a bit of performance improvement. last but not least, i added the --bare flag to the command when i used git push to merge the changes. otherwise, the incoming changes would be automatically committed, which would create an extra commit in the first commit made to the canonical repo. these are the changes i made:
when i was cloning the repo, i had the --bare flag set to false, so it made a repository. when i switched it to true, it made a bare repository, and after that, the repo was completely broken and the config and refs files were all missing. i changed that to false and was able to get a clone up and running.
this sets up a repository on the github server so i can pull the canonical repo from there. i dont really use the set-url command often, but this lets you set a custom url for a server and makes it so that every time you run git pull, it will automatically update to the latest state of the remote repo.
this makes the master branch of the remote repository the default branch. if you make a branch off of master, by default, that branch will automatically be set to be the remote repositories master branch, which i dont like, so i changed it to the new branch i want to use. then i put the remote repository url into the git pull command. this lets me pull from my remote repository into my local repo. 3d9ccd7d82
