Vocabulary for IELTS is a place that every examinee must master in order to crack the higher IELTS band 7. You might have read in my previous articles that fluency and grammar proficiency is more than enough for getting 6 band score in writing and speaking. It is absolutely fine if you are not able to use the words which are in a higher bracket. However, if your aim is 7 band or higher then you must get used to with advanced and core vocabulary of English language.
In this article, we would see advanced vocabulary. You would be provided a complete, comprehensive list of core words which is used by prominent authors, columnists, and writers in different standard magazines, newspapers, and IELTS reading. This list is extremely useful for you in writing essays. In addition, this would be helpful for the reading and speaking section too.
In the list, the first word is a basic word which is known to most English aspirants who are graduates or postgraduates even intermediate. With this, two or three advanced words have been provided. You should get the mastery over these words. You can increase your band score by simply replacing the word which you use presently with the more advanced words which have been given here.
We'll focus on essay writing rather than task 1, but the criteria and principals are more or less the same. There is some clarification of some of the differences between the marking of task 1 and 2 at the end.
You must also have a clear position throughout. So if your opinion is not clear and you seem to change it during the essay, then this could be a problem for achieving an IELTS band 7 in this criterion.
Your lexis is basically your vocabulary, and as it says in the descriptors, you'll need to show that you know some less common words and be able to use them precisely.
Unfortunately there is no magic bullet that is suddenly going to move you up a band. But there may be things you can improve on that will help if you think you are making errors in what what is needed in the criteria.

IELTS Writing Task 2 requires you to write an essay in response to a statement, or premise. You must read the question carefully so that all parts are answered. For example, in the question below, you must do 3 things to achieve a higher band, showing the examiner that you are addressing all parts of the task.
Essay writing need not necessarily be a difficult achievement. Present your ideas in a structured manner using paragraphs to present and develop each idea. Make use of the following points to help you structure your essay.
Linking devices or transition words are connecting words and phrases that make your answer cohesive. It is the glue that sticks your sentences and ideas together. The below table shows some linkers that are frequently used in essays.
When you are aiming for a band 7, you need to master both simple and complex sentences. And remember that you must produce frequent error-free sentences as well. While using the same words over and over again will keep you stuck in Band 6, to earn Band 7, you must not only vary your language, but do so in a way that does not misinterpret the question, misstate your argument, or involve not-quite-right vocabulary.
Notice also that the word effects is not paraphrased. This is perfectly acceptable; it is not necessary to replace every single word, just to avoid sounding as if you are copying the question because your vocabulary is limited.
This is another bit of typical Band 6 writing. It replaces the moderate, semi-formal language of the question with inappropriately fancy synonyms (escalation in acclaim) and non-standard vocabulary (merits and demerits).

In IELTS writing task 2 various topics come up, such as the environment, family, society, work, technology, education, food and diet, health, sports and sometimes crime. The topic of crime is difficult for many students as there is so much vocabulary surrounding this.
Planning is important in IELTS writing task 1 just as it is in the essay section writing task 2. Spend about 4 minutes planning task 1 as you must analyse the task, think of what comparisons you have to make, the language/grammar needed and also decide on a logical structure.

Test takers can understand the required topics and tasks from band 7 (about 800 characters). The materials are spoken in a neutral tone without an obvious accent. The speaking speed is normal or fast. Be able to get rid of the impact of the environment and then comprehend the main facts and views of the materials. Be able to understand the logical construction of the speeches or news and also be able to comprehend the related social and cultural implications.
Test takers can handle all required syllables, vocabulary and grammar for band 7 and pronounce these syllables accurately with a neutral tone. Be able to flexibly use complex sentences to express personal views, have a discussion or debate. The content of the speaker should be fluent in words and sentences with logical thoughts and abundant details. Be able to speak in different styles based on the situation and use rhetorical methods to enhance expression.
Test takers can read the required syllables, characters and vocabulary for advanced level. Reading speed should be no less than 200 characters per minute. Test takers are supposed to be proficient with Chinese expressions and thoughts to have a comprehensive understanding of the construction and content of the articles.
Test takers can handwrite all the Chinese characters from the required handwriting list. Be able to write practice essays, explanatory essays, argumentative essays, and thesis with a considerable length. The essays should have clear point of view, layout, proper expressions, standard format, and normal logical thoughts. Test takers are supposed to be able to use different kinds of rhetoric in writing.
Test takers have elementary professional translation skills. Be able to translate topics and tasks from band 7 with completed content. Be able to handle consecutive and accompanying interpretation on formal occasions. Be able to translate narrative, explanatory and argumentative essays accurately with correct formatting.
The HSK is an official, standard Chinese proficiency test used in international Chinese language education. Starting July 2021, the New HSK standard will replace the previous six-level model. The New HSK 3.0 has a more specific classification system, including both levels and bands. Comparing the difficulty and quantity of words required for all four-dimension benchmarks (syllables, characters, vocabulary, and grammar), the New HSK is more rigorous than the old one. Here is a brief overview of the New HSK and how it differs from the old HSK.
Compared to the current HSK 2.0, there is an obvious increase in the difficulty and number of words required for each band. In other words, if you took the current HSK 3 test and passed, that only equals the New HSK elementary level band 1/2.
