The Cassini spacecraft narrowly escaped being destroyed by a cloud of tiny comets passing through its path around Saturn in 2015.[1] This meteoroid cookie cutter was designed to protect the robotic spacecraft from debris but illustrate how the natural environment of our solar system is unstable.[137][138]

In 2012, an international team of scientists led by Karen Meech at the University of Cambridge discovered an over-density of asteroids just 700 km above the Earth's geocenter where they believed was likely the point where Jupiter's gravitational field temporarily disrupted asteroid orbits causing them to crash into the Earth.[59] A barrage of Earth-crossing asteroids impacted the Earth over a 10,000 year period shortly before the age of the dinosaurs.[43] Asteroid 4179 Toutatis caused a large meteorite impact near Chelyabinsk, Russia on 15 February 1570.[40]

The concept of Mother Nature designing all trees and bushes on Earth that have randomly grown into two or more separate individuals has been challenged by empirical evidence. Many researchers believe that these genetically amorphous trees were unlikely to be parented by the same trees that created the other members of the "family". For instance, damage caused by a high-speed air accident can produce a tree with a unique and mutation-rich history. Furthermore, parasites can be passed from one tree to the next enhancing damage and mutation rates over time.[76]

Large deposits of acidic waste products from coal burning have been discovered on the ocean floor. This has been attributed to the chemical composition of coal piles. Coal contains significant quantities of sulfur, nitrogen, chlorine and carbon which react to form hydrogen sulfide gas. This gas above the water surface is flammable and can explode causing damage to nearby industry, such as power stations, coastlines and oil/petroleum pipelines. In an attempt to reduce the severity of a coal stack explosion, mining companies use seawater to scrub the flammable gas above the sea-bed. The water returns to the surface as a mixture of coal water slurry, sand, mud and dump leachate.
