Castello di Amorosa is a Napa Valley winery that was built as a reproduction of a 13th century Tuscan castle. It makes a range of wines but it is best known for its wines made from Italian grape varieties like Sangiovese, Primi...
As a historic, family-owned business, caring for the environment, the community, and the next generation is both a privilege and a responsibility. We are stewards of the Napa Valley environment through our sustainable farming practices and conservation efforts, and we foster education and support of local winemaking and youth communities through several on-estate and local programs.
Also known as Pinot Gris, the variety has a longer history of producing quality wines in France, particularly in Alsace, and is grown by a number of producers in California. One that rises above many from California is the 2018 North Coast Pinot Grigio from Castello di Amorosa.
The Napa Valley winery near Calistoga is, as the name suggests, a modern-day, Tuscan-style castle, a monument to the Italian roots of its owner, Dario Sattui, whose great-grandfather began making wine in California in the late 1800s.
This is a premium fruit juice made from high-quality wine grape varieties from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and the North Coast. These same vineyards also supply Castello di Amarosa with the same premium grapes used in the making of their wines.
In addition to teaching people how to smell and taste wine, one can use these juices in so many ways. They are unlike any grape juice you will find at any grocery store. The juices can be served to folks who do not drink alcohol or are too young to drink alcohol. They also would make excellent mixers in a cocktail.
The 2017 Classic Sangiovese ($36) is at the beginings of its release but is already tasting great. Notes of cherries, rhubarb, strawberries, cardamom, vanilla, and oak fill the glass. The oak notes do not overwhelm the fruit, which is a common issue with Sangiovese. It has a beautiful balance of acidity, fruit, and tannins for the win. (Acidity is the mouth watering sensation you get from wine.)
As for pairings, like the Classic Sangiovese the Voyager Vineyard Sangiovese is very flexible. I kept thinking about Pasta fagioli or Italian meatball soups, risotto, braised beef, or pecan crusted pork chops as perfect pairings. I ended up pairing the wine with a traditional beef and pork ragu over zucchini noodles finished with fresh grated parmesan and basil. It was perfection.
Nearly twenty years ago, I purchased the spectacular property upon which I built Castello di Amorosa. It sat on a hundred-seventy beautiful acres of forest and hills with a stream, a lake, one of the first houses built in Napa County and a great Victorian home where I chose to live. It was my dream property, culminating a search of many years. The purchase also came with a great building permit for a large winery building which had taken the previous owner thirteen years to obtain. At first, I had no intention of starting another winery- I already had V.Sattui. My plan was only to replant historic vineyards there. However, throughout my adult life, I had been fascinated with Italian medieval architecture; and, because of my passion- some would say obsession- I had already bought a handful of ancient properties in Italy, including a small castle near Florence (now sold), a medieval monastery near Siena (now being refurbished) and a Medici palace in southern Tuscany, which we are remodeling into a period hotel. You get the picture- it's an incurable malady.I was naive enough to think I was ready to begin. My plan was to incorporate all the ideas and details that I had assembled from my first trip to Italy in 1965 in my 8,500 square-foot winery. I would create a fantasy, a maze where every room and space opened into a new and different adventure as one traveled throughout the building. I would include all the elements of a true medieval castle- a moat and drawbridge, high walls and towers on a hillside, a great hall, courtyards and loggias, an apartment for the nobles, a big kitchen, an outdoor brick oven for baking bread, a church, a horse stables, secret passage ways and, of course, a prison and torture chamber.
Castello di Amorosa produces primarily Italian style wines while reflecting California's unique climate, soil and growing conditions. The majority of our red wine grapes are grown in the Napa Valley, while our white grapes are grown in the Carneros district of the Napa Valley or in the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, as both of these cool areas are ideal for white wine grapes. Some grapes are also purchased from select growers.Castello di Amorosa is a Certified Napa Green winery, and our estate vineyards are in the heart of the Diamond Mountain District, a nested American Viticultural Area (AVA) within the Napa Valley. Located east of highway 29 and just 3 miles south of the city of Calistoga, our 30 acres of vineyards surrounding the Castello are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Primitivo.
Georg Salzner, president of Castello di Amorosa, said he believes the flames of the Glass Fire came up a canyon on the side of the Calistoga winery early Monday morning and set ablaze the roof tiles of the farmhouse, an accessory building that sits behind the main castle building and wine tasting rooms.
Lyn, our host, took us on a magical tour of all the rooms before conducting a delicious wine tasting that included a barrel tasting. The featured wines were a 2017 Sangiovese, a 2017 Sparkling Rose (Spumante) a 2015 La Castellana, similar to a Super Tuscan, a 2018 Old Vine Zinfandel, a Merlot, some white varietals, and La Fantasia. The latter is an Italian style frizzante (soft sparkling) wine which is naturally sweet with a low ABV with bright aromas of strawberry and pomegranate, offering a vibrant mouthfeel with a kiss of summer on the finish.
Their wines are meticulously crafted in an Italian style, and align perfectly with the medieval theme. If you would like to purchase their delicious wines, please visit their website: Napa Valley Castle Winery in Calistoga Castello di Amorosa
Nestled in the rolling hills of Calistoga, California, Castello di Amorosa is a world-class winery based in a replica of a 13th-century Tuscan castle. The owner, Dario Sattui, is a fourth-generation winemaker and ardent Italophile who spent $40 million to bring a slice of the old country to Napa Valley. At 142,000 square feet, the castle took more than a decade to build.
Castello di Amorosa or Castle of Love in English is one of the most famous wineries in Napa, California. To be exact, the actual address of this winery is in Calistoga. The buildings were built in medieval style. When you get in there, it would feel like you are in a period movie.
Despite how big Castello di Amorosa is, it has only one area that gives you all the services. In the basement, you will be able to taste wine, buy souvenirs and pay for them at cashier. The rest of the castle is solely for you to enjoy a walk and pretend like you are on Game of Thrones.
The entrance fee is 25 dollars. You will be given a ticket for wine tasting. Once you get into the basement area, a staff member dressed in medieval barkeeper costume will escort you to an available spot at the counter. After that, a sommelier will greet you and give you a list of wines. These staff members were very polite and make sure to answer all of your questions. However, the cashier I met was rather rushing to finish her job instead of attempting a good farewell.
One the list of wine, the price per bottle of each kind is stated next to the name. Therefore, why not try the most expensive ones Regardless, in taste wise, La Fantasia was the most delicious for me. It is not a surprise that it is the best-selling wine at Castello di Amorosa. Not to mention the so-called non-alcoholic Grape Juice is the best I have ever had. You can tell that it was made from high-quality grapes.
Napa Valley resident, winemaker, and estate winery owner, Igor Sill, compiled a list of the most popular, high-rated wineries in Napa Valley from TripAdvisor and Yelp. Then, he visited each and every one of them, unannounced, to find out if they lived up to all the hype.
This is truly a wonderful and gorgeous place to spend the day. V. Sattui believes in doing very little advertising, relying mostly on word-of-mouth from loyal Wine Club members, which seems to be working very well for them. Highly recommended for fun-loving novice wine buffs, as well as the accomplished wine aficionado.
Out of all ten wineries, Artesa offers the very best in terms of Napa scenery. The family-owned winery is set upon the highest hill of the 350-acre estate. A terrace offers beautifully expansive vistas of the surrounding countryside, and on clear days, a view of the San Francisco skyline.
The smaller wineries will often receive guests on an appointment only basis, so always call ahead, or visit websites for availability. Also, note that Napa zoning restrictions preclude (as in, do not allow) picnic eating at most Napa estates, so hold off packing that picnic basket.
Virtually all wineries will charge a fee for the tour or tasting, but given the amount of information garnered from the hospitality staff and the quality of wines poured, along with the beautiful and stylish settings, these visits are still an exceptional value. 59ce067264
