In 2000, Sri Lanka's first women's choir, Samithi, was created and in 2004, the first annual international Sinhala Choral Festival was held in the old city of Anuradhapura and Anuradhapura was designated the UNESCO Cultural Site of National Importance in 1999, thus, inducing the revival of folklore, music and dance of Anuradhapura was started at the request of the UNESCO. They have completed the renovation of the Anuradhapura archaeological site. In 2000, the Ministry of Arts converted the compound of the national museum in Colombo into a performing arts centre dedicated to classical music, dance, modern Indian music, and theatre.
In 1983, the country's first pop group, Iron Lion, composed and sang their songs in the styles of Urdu music popular in India. They received an award from the government and established a school for the youngsters. In 1987, Zipi Cinckovi was the first person to be inducted into The National Academy of Performing Arts in Sri Lanka. The Government of Sri Lanka commissioned both the translation and recordings of every Kithi (nation music) in the country for the first time. In 1993 the government established the Ministry of Culture featuring the State Institute of Music in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The key findings of the Music Development Project between 1989 and 1990 is documented in the book, The Music of Sri Lanka by Prof. L.Ranwala and Dr. Sandhya Ranwala. The Kithi Project created ten categories of Nambe (Patty). Tamility and Kethagaham (Basanti) were the main categories of the Program. The Information and Communication Study (ICIS) which is a study under the Department of National Economic Planning (UNP plan) reveal that between 1985 and 2003 the number of visitors to the temple, church (Catholic & Anglican) and mosque have been increasing significantly and, therefore, the current tourism trend is the highest in terms of the number of tourists (Jan. 2011). The study also reveals that the tourist economy in central Sri Lanka has had a positive impact on the ethnic Tamil population during the same period. Sinhala tourism industry has not yet reached the same level as the tourism sector is confined mainly to the ancient monuments.
