The method of the School of Saint Thomas, which forms the whole of Thomistic thought, is the method of the 'pursuit of certainty', which Saint Thomas had explained as a method which purifies the intellect and offers a better way of acquiring knowledge. The method of the School is the way of the 'certainty of faith'.

While the revival of Thomistic thought resulted from a renewal of interest in the history of Scholastic philosophy, it was the fruit of the discovery that such a renewal required a renewal of the whole of Thomistic philosophy and its study. From the time of Saint Bonaventura, a great Franciscan philosopher, the Scholastic method had taken on a systematic form. It becomes a philosophy of the sciences, the whole of which is contained in the 'Summa Theologica' of Saint Thomas. From that same time, beginning with the great Stagirite, the study of this great system of thought, the Summa, was entrusted to philosophical circles, and the work soon acquired an international dimension. That made it possible for philosophers to impart this method to all theology, philosophy and other disciplines so that they might truly develop within their own specific spheres.

The profundity and richness of faith, its intrinsic relationship with the world of culture and with human life, make it part of a human reality, which must have a form suited to it, not a form extraneous to it. It is a reality which humans encounter and which shapes the way they think and behave. Because of this, faith is not something completely subjective but is at the same time a reality which is beyond subjectivity. For this reason, it cannot simply be imposed through coercion, even from the highest place in the Church. This is true because it is a reality which is lived out in full, not an empty concept or an abstract idea; because it is a reality which, in a sense, moves us to life, and not one that, by its very nature, binds us to a particular form of life; because it is a reality in which the human person is called, above all, to be loyal to God's love and to be totally at the service of others, whatever be their condition. These are some of the reasons why, in the Catholic Church, faith is a reality to be lived, not a theory to be imposed.
